A Comparison of Medicaid Institutional versus Community Expenditures

Authors: Steve Gold

Description:

This online article examines how states spend their Medicaid dollars to support people with disabilities. It compared spending for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities to spending for people who were aging or had physical disabilities. They found that nearly all states were spending a much greater proportion of money to support people who were aging or had physical disabilities to live in institutions when compared to people with intellectual disabilities. The article asked the question why this is so, and yielded many comments.
