Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts
Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, provides an environment in which potential and practicing artists -- with and without disabilities -- experiment with different creative media and realize their artistic vision.
Description:
At the Interact Center, many artists -- painters, musicians, actors, writers, dancers, sculptors, and practitioners of other fine arts -- develop their skills and perform, exhibit, and display the products of their creative enterprise.
Interact is licensed as adult day care and a day training and habilitation center so that persons with various disabilities who are eligible for home and community-based services, third party reimbursements, or other entitlements may receive services and utilize the facility.
The Center also serves as a resource for businesses, educational, and social services which have an active interest in productively including all people, with and without disabilities, as workers, customers, or service recipients. This mission is carried out through direct training initiatives and through the development of written and filmed materials.
The Center is a meeting ground where established artists can encounter artists with disabilities and serve as mentors, receiving inspiration in return. An internship program provides opportunities for students in the arts, education, psychology, and recreational or occupational therapy who are interested in the arts and disabilities. It is a fully integrated environment where people can exercise their creativity with the coaching of skills artists.
Regular theater performances for the public include plays about larger societal issues. Interact also performs some plays on disability issues, usually with a great deal of hilarity, for agency and self-advocate audiences. They have performed at national conferences and in several states.
