Community Living and Participation for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: What the Research Tells Us

Authors: American Assoication on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) and the Association on University Centers on Disability (AUCD)

Description:

This report is written at a time when the Americans With Disabilities Act is turning 25 years old and there has been a quiet call to return to building institutions to support the many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are waiting for services. This report reminds everyone how research has shown that people are happier and leading more productive and self-determined lives as they have left institutions to live in the community. It also explains how community living matches what self-advocates are asking for, and is aligned with federal policy regarding how services to people with disabilities ought to be delivered. Here is an excerpt from the introduction to the paper:

"On this 25th anniversary, AAIDD and AUCD are releasing the attached paper, based on over 50 years of research, to describe how our two organizations think the next 25 years of the ADA should translate into access, opportunity, and support for people with disabilities. This work has been shaped by two primary sources: the voices of people with disabilities themselves and the research evidence on achieving the best possible outcomes for people with disabilities. These sources, of course, have also been shaped by our national laws and policies, the most significant being the ADA."
