"Sign Me A Story" is an app that teaches sign language and reading through story and video, and includes children with Down syndrome as sign language video demonstrators. It is specifically geared toward making the learning of sign language easy and fun for children of all abilities through reading, stories and videos. There currently are two stories available for the "Sign Me a Story" App. The first, "Green Beanies - One Cool Cat," introduces 14 signs and is free. The second story, "Green Beanies - Two Magical Hats," reviews these then teaches 12 new signs. It costs $.99. Both of the stories include music & sound effects making for an exciting interactive user experience.
This app has been recognized by "Teachers With Apps" as one of its best apps for early childhood education, as well as being included in the "Moms With Apps" list of special needs apps. It was also selected as one of the "Top Ten Special Needs Apps of 2013," and has received positive reviews from "Smart Apps for Special Needs." The developer, Valerie Carter, is the parent of a child with Down syndrome. She has a goal of creating awareness and acceptance, while helping children develop communication skills through signing and storytelling.
