Mary Kay Kennedy
Mary Kay Kennedy has been responsible for the development of self-advocacy curricula, innovative outreach approaches, and effective community organizing workshops. She has been successful at helping groups build individual and collective leadership one step at a time. As Executive Director since 1989, she has built ACT into a solid, well-respected organization both in the disability and the larger nonprofit community.
Advocating Change Together (ACT) is a grassroots disability rights organization run by and for people with developmental and other disabilities. ACTís mission is to help people across disabilities see themselves as part of a larger disability rights movement and make connection to other civil and human rights struggles.
ACT staff and members are available to help groups develop self-advocacy programs to build individual and collective power. ACT has developed and packaged 25 self-advocacy programs that include everything you need to present dynamic, interactive workshops that inform, inspire and motivate. The kits include step-by-step common sense methods, using overhead presentations, discussion guides, video, role-play, and interactive exercises. ACT can provide the workshops directly to self-advocates, or help facilitators build the skills and confidence to deliver the workshops independent of ACT or other consultants.
ACT also offers a leadership training program called Common Vision. The focus of this program is on building skills needed for individual advocacy and systems change organizing. Common Vision unites people with disabilities and allies via multi-day retreats, resource material and follow-up technical assistance.
