I am the director of the Self-Advocacy Associations of New York State, and have been for the last 12 years. I have worked with and for people with developmental disabilities since 1969 when I was an attendant at a state institution--yes it was a horrible place. I've been a house parent, a house manager, a program manager and an exectutive director (for two provider organizations). One of my favorite things to do is write songs about self-advocacy and self-determination and perform them with self-advocates.
Here's some things I'd be happy to talk about: creating partnerships with state agencies to support self-advocay, how to organize self-advocacy efforts on a statewide basis, managing self-advocacy organizations including funding, supporting self-advocates to lead organizations. I'm also interested in doing presentations on the importance of humor in self-advocacy as well as writing and peforming songs about the self-advocacy movement.
