ADA Technical Assistance Program


Description:

The ADA Technical Assistance Program provides free information and technical assistance directly to businesses, non-profit service providers, state and local governments, people with disabilities, and the general public. It is housed within the U.S. Department of Justice and the following are its major activities.

Administering the ADA Information Line
This toll-free ADA Information Line provides information and free publications about the requirements of the ADA including the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. The phone numbers are 800/514-0301(voice), 800/514-0383 (TTY)

Creating Technical Assistance Materials
As part of their enforcement and technical assistance efforts to promote compliance with the ADA, the program provides a range of publications. Many are available online, click on the "Web Links" tab above to go to a list of materials available for download.

Some examples of these materials include explanations the regulations that apply to State and local governments (Title II) and those that apply to businesses and non-profit service providers (Title III); Technical Assistance Manuals with yearly updates that explain these regulations; and materials that promote understanding of specific ADA requirements including a series of Question-and-Answer publications addressing specific topics, and a series called ADA-TA aimed at businesses, State and local governments, architects, and others explaining efficient ways to comply with the ADA.

Administering the ADA Speakers Bureau
The ADA Speakers Bureau provides expert speakers at selected national and regional conferences and training sessions. To request a speaker for a major conference, write to:

In addition to the major activities outlined below, the ADA Technical Assistance Program undertakes broad outreach initiatives to increase awareness and understanding of the ADA to community organizations, businesses,law enforcement and elected officials, and people with and without disabilities.
