Improving Health and Access to Health Care for People with Disabilities
Authors: DREDF (Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund)
This is a position paper prepared by The Disability Rights & Education Defense Fund (DREDF)that asks the US Congress to enact laws to ensure access to all types of healthcare services for people who have disabilities. It is available in full text by clicking on the web links tab above.
This paper was prepared at the time that congress was debating the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and pointed out that having access to health insurance coverage was only half the battle for many people with disabilities. It provided examples in three areas in which the US Congress needed to mandate healthcare providers into providing accessibility to people with disabilities, these are:
-Language Access, the paper provided examples of the need for mandated sign language interpreters in healthcare programs just as there are interpreters for other languages.
-Access to disease prevention and health promotion programs, the paper provided many examples of the need for people with disabilities to be afforded access to things like exercise programs or patient education programs.
-Tracking of healthcare disparities, the paper pointed out that while congress funds a great deal of research regarding disparities in health outcomes, people with disabilities are seldom included in sampling frames as a group of interests.
