Joan Guthrie Medlen, MEd, RD

Description:

Joan Guthrie Medlen is a registered dietitian with an Advanced Certificate in Adult Weight Management from the American Dietetic Association. She has a Masters in Education with a focus on instruction design and an interest in universal design for learning, especially for people with intellectual disabilities who are nonverbal and who have trouble writing. Joan is the author of The Down Syndrome Nutrition Handbook: A Guide to Promoting Healthy Lifestyles (2002, 2006), the first, and only, text dedicated to promoting healthy living for people with Down syndrome at any age. Joan focuses her wide array of activities on nutrition and wellness coaching for people of all ages and stages.

Joan's home base is in Portland, Oregon, however she is available to consult via telephone and/or email. She also travels to share her expertise and perspective as both a dietitian and the mother of a son with multiple disabilities. Here are a few of the areas in which she can help:
- Providing nutrition coaching for people with and without developmental disabilities
- Providing nutrition counseling
- Leading activity-based "Practical Workshops" on nutrition for parents, health care professionals, teachers, support providers, and self-advocates.
- Writing, editing, and publishing materials for both the general public and professionals
- Delivering Keynote addresses
- Designing educational materials, and conducting research
- Analyzing and modifying menus and recipes to fit lifestyle and medical needs

What Joan enjoys most in her work is supporting people in their decision to choose a healthier lifestyle. She works with individuals, families, staff, and consultants to make conscious choices for tangible changes. Her person-centered strategies people to discover and create quality, healthy lives. Joan understands that knowing what choices are available and having easy-to-use tools to act on those choices are key links that are missing in daily life to help people choose to improve their health.

Joan is the mother of two young men, one of whom has autism, Down syndrome, celiac disease, and has limited speech. In her free time she enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, doing calligraphy, attempting pilates, and going on long bike rides along the Columbia River.
