The Trace Research & Development Center

Description:

The vision of the Trace Research & Development Center is:

"A world that is accessible and usable by people of all ages and all abilities - each experiencing information and communication technology in a way they can understand and use."

The Trace Center is a part of the College of Information Science, University of Maryland. It is funded as a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), US Department of Health and Human Services.

Click on the "Web Links" tab above to learn about current research being done at the Trace Center. Much of it revolves around the concept of "Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure" (GPII), as it applies to people who have disabilities. GPII is mostly concerned with assuring equal access to digital technologies, and especially the internet, to groups who have accessibility barriers.

Earlier, the Trace Center conducted extensive research and developed many innovations and related publications in the areas of augmentative communication, and access to computer hardware and software, as well as the internet. Click on the “Web Links” tab above to visit the web page showing success stories from the areas where the Trace Center has previously done research and developed product modifications. There is also a link to search the many publications it has developed. Many of these publications are fact sheets or short articles that can be downloaded for free.
