About the Author:
Sheila is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She was one of 42 social workers selected by the Soros Foundation, Open Society Institute, Project on Death in America, for its Social Work Leadership Development Awards Program. Her insights come from years of experience working with patient populations in cancer, HIV/AIDS, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology and ophthalmology; and in palliative care and hospice settings.

The book received a positive review in the Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care in 2007, here is the concluding paragraph:

“Overall, this short book is written for adults of all ages with a limited knowledge of healthcare or for those who are overwhelmed by their unavoidable interaction with the healthcare system. It is not a resource for the medically knowledgeable, for those seeking specific guidance on one-of-a-kind problems, and it does not offer cook-book style solutions to every problem. It does offer good guidance and helpful advice. Easily-readable, it offers information to be better informed and to navigate complicated healthcare systems. Most importantly, it encourages patients and their families to ask questions and to voice concerns so that they will understand options, resources, and consequences of their healthcare choices and decisions. To that end, the author offers suggestions about questions that are appropriate to ask. Overall, this book is a good resource for anyone with concerns about how they will interact with a complicated healthcare system.”
