 Full Description: 
With advanced medical knowledge people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (ID/DD) are living longer, while the aging of the baby boomer population is causing the number of older people in the United States to rise dramatically. This report comes from researchers at the University of Illinois –Chicago who studied the service systems available to support older adults who have ID/DD. These systems include both those devoted exclusively to people with ID/DD of all ages and those devoted to people who are aging, regardless of disability status. While both of the systems are facing increased demands, they do not have a history of working together, with people who have ID/DD being left out of initiatives serving the aging population as a whole. Using document review, interviews and data analysis the researchers proposed the following goals:

-Goal A: Raise the visibility of developmental disabilities concerns in policy reforms.

-Goal B: Improve program implementation of health and long-term support initiatives to better address needs of persons with developmental disabilities.

-Goal C: Develop a workforce with knowledge and skills to address disability and aging issues.

-Goal D: Better understand the age-related needs of people with developmental disabilities and the best practices in meeting those needs through research and evaluation.
