Raising Renee
"Raising Renee" is about Beverly McIver's journey as an artist, and a promise McIver made to her mother Ethel McIver, who died of cancer in 2004. Beverly McIver had promised to take care of her older sister Renee, who was born mentally disabled. The documentary, by filmmakers Jeanne Jordan and Steven Ascher, follows Beverly for six years as she fulfills that promise and takes care of her sister while continuing to paint and teach.
Renee now lives in her own apartment in Greensboro, near family. Throughout the film, she makes and sells potholders. During a question-and-answer session after the film, an audience member said he admired Beverly's paintings, but he wanted to buy one of Renee's potholders, and Renee McIver obliged.
