Why This Is Important

The history of our thinking about people with disabilities and what it means to build a person-centered culture would not have evolved to
where we are today, without certain classic works. The Community
Imperative, first published in 1979, stirred a controvery and continues to do so. Burton Blatt's powerful images of persons living at
New York state institutions, in Christmas in Purgatory, continue to
haunt us. Documents such as these stirred people to outrage, action,
and new service principles and designs.

It is the intention of QualityMall to make these documents easily available.
